Exposure

Program systems will sometimes get exposure wrong. For example, if the background in a photo is very dark an automatic exposure system will often set things up so that a figure in the foreground is overexposed. An extreme results of this this shown below. The opposite can happen if a dark miniature is photographed against a light background when the miniature will often come out underexposed.


Relying on the cameras programed exposure mode for this shot led to the figure being overexposed	Fully manual controls allow for precise adjustment of exposure.

Most digital cameras have exposure compensation controls which can allow you to work round this problem, though cameras with fully manual exposure controls offer maximum flexibility. A picture in which a miniature is slightly underexposed can be rescued using photo-manipulation software, though there is no way that the detail lost when a miniature is overexposed can ever be regained.
